Ride The Twisted Sisters Route
This 100-mile loop is, without a doubt, among the best, most challenging motorcycle roads in the state. The route follows canyons and climbs jagged, steep hills; the roads offer many tight, twisty curves with shear drop offs alongside and not much in the way of guardrails. In one 15-mile section, there are approximately 65 curves!
Experienced riders bliss out on this ride. Beginners are cautioned to focus on the road—even when a panoramic vista pops up along the way. Don’t forget to top off the gas tank before heading out.
Rio Frio Oak Tree
The Rio Frio Oak is the third largest Live Oak tree in the state. This ancient live oak has more than a passing claim to fame. Not only is it a giant among trees, with few peers in its species, but it is a bearing point from which all land in the town of Rio Frio is platted.

Lost Maples State Natural Park
Lost Maples State Natural Area is a pristine area of hills and canyons on the upper Sabinal River in the Edwards Plateau of Texas, United States. It is designated a Natural Area, rather than a State Park, and therefore the primary focus is maintenance and protection of the property’s natural state. Accordingly, access and recreational activities may be restricted if the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) deems such action necessary to protect the environment.
Lost Maples State Natural Area is located about 5 miles (8 km) north of Vanderpool, Texas and 71 miles (114 km) west of San Antonio. The preserve sits along the Sabinal River in western Bandera County and far eastern Real County.

Hill Country State Natural Area
Tucked away in the rugged terrain southwest of Bandera is Hill Country State Natural Area, an undeveloped and secluded retreat. Approximately 40 miles of multiuse trails wind up grassy valleys, cross spring-fed streams, and climb steep limestone hills. Equestrians, hikers and mountain bikers can enjoy exploring the trails. Campsites for primitive and back country camping are available to equestrian and non-equestrian campers. There is also a Group Lodge with a kitchen. Swimming and fishing are not available at this time due to extremely low water levels. Fire danger conditions can change rapidly and a burn ban can be enacted with little advanced notice. Please contact the park for current conditions prior to your arrival.
Recreational activity centers around 40 miles of designated, multiuse trails. The park offers a back country setting for activities such as primitive camping, backpacking, mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, equestrian camping, and nature viewing.

Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area
The Devil’s Sinkhole, is a National Natural Landmark that houses one of the state’s largest colonies of Mexican free-tailed bats. This enormous vertical cavern is thought to be the largest single-chamber cavern in Texas. The opening is a shaft approximately 50 feet wide that drops 140 feet into the cavern. Here, the shaft balloons out to a diameter of over 320 feet and reaches a total depth of over 350 feet. From late spring through early fall the sinkhole provides an amazing venue to witness over 3 million bats stream out into the evening sky.
Evening bat tours, day tours to see the sinkhole, nature hikes, and even morning bat return flight tours bring visitors to the sinkhole and beyond to explore this unique piece of the Edwards Plateau. The 1,860-acre natural area is wild and mainly undeveloped. On your visit you can find remnants from the ranching past, trails for guided hikes, and two bird blinds for bird watching. At the sinkhole itself you can step out over the chasm onto the viewing platform and peer down into the depths below; the platform is wheelchair accessible. To protect this sensitive natural resource, visitors are not allowed to enter the sinkhole.

Kickapoo Caverns State Natural Area
The park offers picnic sites, camping, hiking, mountain biking, bird-watching, cave tours, and evening bat flight viewing during the season. Take a virtual tour with our interactive trails map.
Interesting features of the park include 20 known caves, two of which are large enough to be significant. Kickapoo Cavern is approximately 0.25 miles in length (1,400 feet) and boasts some impressive formations. Tours are offered on Saturdays by reservation. Stuart Bat Cave (formally Green Cave), slightly shorter than Kickapoo at 1,068 feet, is home to large numbers of Mexican free-tailed bats for part of each year. The bats migrate to the cave in mid-March, and usually stay through the end of October. Bat flights are often spectacular, and public observations are available with an entrance permit. To protect this valuable resource and for your safety, please read and follow all rules and regulations and use caution, as conditions change on a daily basis. Unauthorized entrance into caves is prohibited.
Birding opportunities abound in this area. Park facilities include 14 miles of mountain biking trails and 18 miles of undesignated hiking and birding trails. The park has campsites for tents and recreational vehicles (water, electricity, and sewer hookups). There is also a group campsite for up to 30 people.
